John Burkey works out of the Continental traditions of phenomenology, existentialism, and hermeneutics. He has an abiding interest in the history of the concepts of soul-mind-subjectivity and more recent interests in postmodern philosophy of religion. He served as Chair of the Department for stretches of 3 and 7 years, chaired the College Core Curriculum Review, and directed the Siena Symposium on Living Philosophers 2009-10. After 25 years at Siena, he remains enthusiastic about educating undergraduates in the study of philosophy.
