The 20th Annual Clare Center Lecture

Wednesday, October 2, 2013

4:15PM

Key Auditorium, Roger Bacon Hall 202

Guest Speaker:

Dr. David Burr

Professor Emeritus of History, Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University

"What I Learned at the Inquisition: The Hiding and Transport of Fugitive Franciscans in the 14th Century"

A group of 14th-century laypeople in southern France hid fugitive Franciscans from the Inquisition and arranged their escape to Italy.  This lecture will explore the different ways the Inquisitors and laypeople would have justified their actions - what motivated the Inquisitors to seek out and prosecute these fugitive Franciscans; what motivated this group of laypeople to help the same fugitives flee from the Inquisitors?

Event is free and open to the public.
