Congratulations on the birth of your child!
As you look to have your baby baptized in the Roman Catholic faith, please be aware that our Church believes that Baptism represents a formal initiation into the community of faith, and is most appropriately celebrated in the specific church community to which a family belongs. This would ordinarily be your local parish.
Since it is the parish church where a family regularly worships that our Church says is the proper place that the Sacrament of Baptism should ordinarily be celebrated, St. Mary of the Angels Chapel at Siena College is generally not available for celebrating infant baptism.
The Chaplain’s Office at Siena College is not a parish nor can we function as one. For instance, parishes also generally offer baptismal preparation sessions for parents and godparents, an important component of the process that Siena is not able to provide.
We recognize that many alumni have a special connection to the campus ministry at Siena College. However, our policy does not allow us to baptize your infant son or daughter on campus. If you have not joined a parish already, we hope you and your family can find an inviting Catholic parish to join so you can participate in the parish life, including liturgy, and find a spiritual home to raise your son or daughter.
If the Chaplain’s Office can be of any assistance in helping you locate a Catholic parish in your area and getting you registered there, please do not hesitate to contact us. Once you belong to a parish, you should not have any problem getting your child baptized in our faith at that parish.
